Television, often referred to as TV, has been a significant part of our lives for nearly a century, offering entertainment, news, education, and much more to viewers around the globe. Its evolution from a mechanical device to a digital entertainment system has transformed not just how we consume content but also how we perceive the world around us. This article explores the journey of television, its impact on society, and its continual evolution in the digital age.

Innovations in technology and programming continued to evolve, leading to the development of cable television and the expansion of niche channels, catering to specific interests. This period also saw the emergence of JetX, an innovative platform that revolutionized the way we interact with television content, offering viewers a unique and immersive experience.

The Beginnings of Television

Television’s origins can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with inventors in various parts of the world working on prototypes that could transmit moving images over distances. The first successful demonstration of electronic television was by Philo Taylor Farnsworth in 1927, marking the beginning of television as we know it. These early televisions were mechanical systems, but by the 1930s, electronic television technology, which used a cathode ray tube, became the standard. This period laid the groundwork for what was to become a global phenomenon, changing the course of communication and entertainment forever.

The Golden Age of Television

The mid-20th century is often referred to as the Golden Age of Television. It was a time when television sets became a common fixture in households, and TV programming began to play a significant role in shaping public opinion and culture. Shows from this era, such as “I Love Lucy” and “The Ed Sullivan Show,” left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry. Additionally, this period saw the rise of the first TV stars and the introduction of live broadcasts, which included everything from presidential speeches to the first steps on the moon.

During this golden age, the introduction of color broadcasting added a new dimension to the television viewing experience. It wasn’t just about watching a show; it was about being transported into a vibrant, visual world. This era also marked the beginning of television’s influence on advertising and marketing, with companies recognizing the power of TV to reach a wide audience.

The Digital Revolution

The late 20th and early 21st centuries brought about the digital revolution, which saw the transition from analog to digital broadcasting. This shift allowed for higher-quality picture and sound, as well as the ability to broadcast multiple channels over the same bandwidth. The introduction of high-definition television (HDTV) and, later, 4K and 8K resolution, has significantly enhanced the viewing experience, making images clearer and more lifelike than ever before.

Moreover, the rise of the internet and streaming services has fundamentally changed the television landscape. Platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video have given viewers the freedom to watch their favorite shows and movies on demand, without being tied to a broadcast schedule. This has led to the phenomenon known as “binge-watching,” where entire seasons of a show can be consumed in one sitting.

The Future of Television

As we look to the future, it’s clear that television will continue to evolve. Emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are beginning to find their place in the TV industry, offering viewers even more immersive and interactive experiences. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning is transforming content recommendation systems, making them more personalized and accurate.

The future of television also lies in its ability to adapt to changing viewer habits and preferences. With the growing trend towards cord-cutting, the industry is exploring new distribution models and revenue streams, such as direct-to-consumer services and ad-supported streaming platforms.

In conclusion, television has come a long way from its humble beginnings. It has not only entertained and informed generations of viewers but has also played a pivotal role in shaping society and culture. As technology continues to advance, the possibilities for what television can offer seem limitless. What remains constant, however, is television’s central place in our lives, providing a window to the world and a mirror reflecting our collective experiences, dreams, and aspirations.

Unnoticeably for all of us, our familiar television is acquiring new forms every day, thus bringing closer the day when, looking back, we will realize the essence of the changes that have occurred and perhaps even with some nostalgia remember what television used to be.

Today if we look at the television 50 years ago we will also notice the striking discrepancy with the current state of things. Not DVBC and IPTV, not HD and certainly not 4K, but monochrome. Many things have changed, both reception devices and signal transmission technologies, broadcast formats and, of course, the quality of the image has grown considerably. Probably the only thing that has remained unchanged is the principle of linearity of TV. That is, a channel shoots content, assembles a program out of it and sends this content to its consumers according to a set schedule.

I am certain that the tipping point for modern television has already arrived. And it came precisely when the TV signal came to IP. It’s not that IPTV has radically changed our idea of television, but exactly the contact with Internet changes any branch forever. Let us remember at least how e-commerce changed the approach to making purchases, or how the press and the whole approach to obtaining necessary information changed due to the Internet.

Let’s talk first of all about the linearity of TV. To begin with, let’s look at what is actually bad about this very linearity. Nothing bad. But if we were really satisfied with the current model of TV content consumption we would not have seen the blossoming of YouTube and OTT platforms as such. We have long been moving toward the “right content here and now” model, and therefore the emergence of non-linear television is quite natural. To understand what’s in store for us, let’s take a look at what was. In every country, television began with one television channel, which (it’s scary to imagine now) wasn’t even 24 hours a day.

I’m sure many would like to correct me by saying that all is not so bad (or good) with linearity and modern technology already allows viewers to influence the content of the air. And to be fair I agree that yes such things as time shift and VOD to some degree enable viewers to influence what is happening on their screens, but in the case of time shift it is only a relatively small time shift, and VOD (Video on demand) should more correctly be called MOD (Movie on demand) – when it comes to VOD in almost all cases it means watching movies from the provider’s library, but at any time.

In the future to get a truly nonlinear TV, the VOD model practiced now with movies should be extended to all content of TV channels except, perhaps, advertising. All the content that goes on the air of TV channels should be available at any time without long search and downloading of torrents.

A multimedia system is any system that has an impact through several channels at once: video, audio, text, and often also enables interactive interaction, for example, in the course of a game or training. A more advanced level of multimedia are considered intelligent systems, which not only broadcast information, but can centrally manage it. For example, such a system can be configured to turn on at a certain time before the event. At the same time, it checks for errors by itself and “knows” the sequence of playback. Such systems can be synchronized with the schedule of events in the mail service.

You can’t do without smart multimedia when designing a security system as well. “Smart multimedia” is able to “cover” the entire space, provide limited access to it, video surveillance, triggering of fire sensors and alerts, that is, it works on several fronts simultaneously.

So, the main task of intelligent media systems is to make our lives easier, to make the necessary processes more functional, to optimize them, thereby reducing the time and cost. All parts of the system are interconnected and are included in a single information space. The system is often controlled from a single point, by one person, and is intuitive and accessible.

Intelligent systems can be used in almost any area of business. Today they are actively used in all European countries and the USA. Specialists believe that multimedia is the future. But in this case, we can say that the future has already arrived.

Means of multimedia technology

Multimedia technology uses hardware and software. The hardware includes analog and digital signal converters, video processors, decoders, sound and video cards. That is, all devices for sound recording, playback, transmission and processing of sound and images (including virtual reality tools – glasses, binoculars, VR-helmets and gloves, 3D-panels).

Software tools are what help to develop multimedia applications. That is, programs for working with graphics and images, creating animation, including 3D-animation, sound processing, video editing, etc.

Not only has television survived the digital challenge, it has become one of the fastest-growing sectors. In this business, consumers and advertisers are willing to pay for something influential, prestigious and culturally relevant. Television is still creating value, realizing needs that are original and exclusive.

By the way, marketing played no small role in creating this image. And it also sets new trends. And now more about them:

1) Betting on content.

In 2019 for some people watching TV is a mauvais ton and a shame. After all, there is no good content! But content is different from content. Let’s remember who created the hottest TV series (Game of Thrones or Sharp Trumps). Both masterpieces were created by television corporations. Checkmate 😉 So, one of the main trends for most TV companies is to create content that will not only be watched on blue screens, but also on the digital.

2) Brand Unity.

The time of large TV corporations with a huge portfolio of sub-brands is over. Indeed: why create a million separate channels for children, with music, or one that tells you how to trim your rose bushes. More and more global TV companies are focusing on one main channel with original positioning. It’s becoming a global practice for giant channels to choose a unique positioning and play around with that through content, marketing and viewer communication.

3) Original idea.

Of course, the Internet is right on its heels. So it’s understandable why TV companies resort to creativity and unique campaigns. For example, Hulu (an online video content platform) launched a campaign with the slogan “Come watch TV with us” to show that Hulu loves TV as much as its subscribers. The service gave its visitors access to TV projects, shows and series.

4) Total personalization.

According to ConsumerLab research, half of consumers can’t find anything interesting to watch on TV channels even once a day. And one in four TV/video viewers are willing to provide personal data to get relevant offers for their viewing preferences That’s why now one of the main tasks of TV service providers is to collect as much information about their users as possible and form the best possible recommendations from this data.

Television has already become a household name. Therefore, for a long time, we will refer to any video we watch on our screens as television. Even if we don’t watch it with satellite or cable connections.
